Adventure 8.1: Schwingen in Zuzwil

April 17, 2011

Sounds a little dirty...get your mind out of the gutter. Schwingen is Swiss Alpine wrestling.

In a small town, next to the small town I live, there was some tarp fences put up and 4 circles of saw dust. Welcome to the Schwingen rink where you can find Swiss Rednecks. And you thought only America had rednecks.
The object of Schwingen is simple - pin your opponent. The men where thes shorts over their pants. At least one man must have his hand on the opponents shorts at all times. If they loose grip or move outside of the ring, they must start again. If no one is pinned in 10 minutes, the match is a draw. The ring is roughly 12 ft in diameter piles up with saw dust.

Traditionally the farmers from the Alps wear blue patterned shirts and the others wear white. The winner also traditionally wiped off the loosers back as a sign of respect. The Swiss are very polite. Seriously!
The wiping of the sawdust
No Swiss even would be complete without pork products, mainly brauts and schnitzel, and of course beer. The schnitzel was quite good. Nor would it be complete without yodeling!

The winner
I had to save the best part of the Schwingen match for last.
The winner doesn't get money; he gets a cow! Now that is Redneck!!
